You’re Not a Kid Anymore… But You’re Not Fully Independent Either

Coming home from college can feel like:

“I’ve grown,” and also“I suddenly feel like I’m 15 again.”

That emotional tug-of-war is exhausting.

Why This Identity Shift Feels Confusing

  • Your autonomy expanded at school

  • At home, old expectations return

  • Curfews reappear

  • Family roles snap back into place

  • You’re trying to be respectful and independent

That’s a lot to carry.

Healthy Ways to Navigate It

  • Name what feels different instead of suppressing it

  • Ask instead of assuming family expectations

  • Set gentle boundaries around:

    • sleep

    • friends

    • privacy

    • work

  • Expect discomfort — it’s part of growth

Reminder

Struggling with this doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful. It means you’re growing.

👉 If you feel stuck between who you were and who you’re becoming, I’d love to help you navigate that in a supportive space.
